The National Gambling Board runs a public verification portal listing licensed operators, and the fastest single check is cross-referencing the licence number in a bookmaker's own footer against the specific provincial board named there, for example the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board's own public list.
A licence number that doesn't match any provincial board's records, or a bookmaker that won't publish one at all, is the clearest red flag there is.
